- APRA Europe
- Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, the European trade association of the remanufacturing industry, based in Brussels. STP-Parts is a member.
- CHRA
- Centre Housing Rotating Assembly, the core assembly of a turbocharger: bearing housing, shaft, compressor and turbine wheel. Usually replaced completely during remanufacturing.
- Core
- A used original part that serves as the basis for industrial remanufacturing. The term comes from the US reman market.
- Core broker
- Intermediary who sources cores on the market, identifies, inspects and stores them and supplies them to remanufacturers. STP-Parts is a core broker.
- Core charge
- Another term for the core deposit, common in the US.
- Core deposit
- Amount the buyer of an exchange part pays in addition and gets refunded on return of the used part. Secures the remanufacturer's supply of cores.
- Core management
- Organising the return flow of used parts: collection, identification, inspection, storage and delivery to remanufacturers. The core business of a core broker.
- Core return
- Return of the used part to the supplier of the exchange part, usually against refund of the deposit.
- Dual-mass flywheel (DMF)
- Flywheel with two spring-coupled masses for vibration damping. Remanufactured by specialised companies; do not open as a core. German abbreviation: ZMS.
- EHPS
- Electro-hydraulic power steering: an electrically driven hydraulic pump with control unit supplies a conventional steering gear. Common from the 2000s onwards.
- EPB
- Electric parking brake. On brake calipers with EPB, an actuator motor sits on the caliper and is part of the core.
- EPS
- Electric power steering, electromechanical steering without hydraulics. Motor and control unit sit on the steering gear (pinion or axle-parallel EPS) or on the steering column.
- ERN
- European Remanufacturing Network, an EU-funded network whose studies document, among other things, the typical price of reman parts (60–80% of the new part).
- Exchange number
- Part number of a reman part, at Bosch for example beginning with 0 986. Differs from the number of the new part.
- Exchange part
- Remanufactured part sold against return of the used part. Synonyms: reman part, service exchange part.
- Identification
- Assigning a used part to a part number and variant based on type plate, OE number and design. The basis of every valuation.
- Incoming inspection
- Inspection of a core at the remanufacturer or core broker for identity, completeness and housing condition. Decides on acceptance or rejection.
- LIN regulator
- Alternator regulator with LIN bus connection to the engine control unit. Must be present on the core.
- Lot
- Larger quantity of used parts offered as a whole, type-sorted or mixed.
- Mesh box (Gitterbox)
- Stackable steel mesh container on a pallet footprint. Standard packaging for cores in lots.
- OE number
- Part number of the vehicle manufacturer (Original Equipment). The most important number for identification.
- OEM
- Original Equipment Manufacturer. In the core trade usually synonymous with original part.
- Overrunning alternator pulley (OAP/OAD)
- Alternator pulley with a one-way clutch that keeps torsional vibration from the belt drive away from the alternator. May be missing on the core.
- Recirculating ball steering
- Steering gear design for heavy vehicles in which a recirculating ball nut transmits the steering movement. Known in the trade as a steering box.
- Reman
- Short for remanufacturing.
- Remanufacturer
- Company that carries out remanufacturing on an industrial scale. Buyer of cores. German: Wiederinstandsetzer.
- Remanufacturing
- Industrial reconditioning: complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection, replacement of all wear parts, assembly to OE specification, test bench. The result is an exchange part with warranty.
- Return conditions
- Rules of an exchange programme under which a used part is accepted as a deposit return: variant, completeness, condition, deadline, packaging.
- Steering box
- Steering gear of recirculating ball design for trucks, buses and off-road vehicles.
- Type plate
- Label or stamping on the part with manufacturer, part number and often the OE number. Must be legible on the core.
- Type-sorted
- Separated by part type. A type-sorted mesh box contains only starters or only turbochargers.
- Used part
- A used, removed vehicle part. Not every used part is a core: only remanufacturable used parts with an intact housing count as cores.
- VGT / VNT
- Variable geometry turbine: turbocharger with adjustable guide vanes and actuator. The actuator is part of the core.
- Wastegate
- Exhaust bypass valve on a fixed-geometry turbocharger that limits boost pressure. Pneumatically or electrically actuated.
- Wiederinstandsetzung
- German term for remanufacturing. Not to be confused with Instandsetzung (repair of a single fault).
- ZMS
- German abbreviation for Zweimassenschwungrad, the dual-mass flywheel. See Dual-mass flywheel (DMF).
