Reading the BorgWarner number
BorgWarner numbers have ten digits and begin with the series: 5303 stands for K03, 5304 for K04, 5435 for KP35, 5439 for KP39, 5443 for BV43. Next comes a block that distinguishes new part from exchange part (988 or 970), then the four-digit variant. Example: 5303 988 0029 is a K03 as a new part, 5303 970 0029 the same variant as an exchange part. For identification, both numbers denote the same turbocharger.
The type plate
The plate sits on the compressor housing and gives the BorgWarner number, often the vehicle manufacturer's OE number (at VW for example 06A 145 704 …) and the series. Older KKK units still carry the KKK logo on the plate; the number logic is the same.
Acceptance criteria for BorgWarner cores
- Housing without cracks, compressor housing without chipping
- Shaft turns, compressor wheel may be damaged
- Wastegate actuator or VNT actuator fitted
- Not dismantled
- Oil feed and return undamaged
Typical rejections
- K03/K04 with a cracked turbine housing (common on petrol engines)
- Turbochargers without actuator or wastegate actuator
- Dismantled turbochargers
- Manifold flanges cut off on integrated manifolds
Frequently asked questions
Do you buy K03 turbochargers with an integrated manifold?
Yes. The manifold is part of the core and must not be cut off.
Are Schwitzer turbochargers from trucks in demand?
Yes, the S series from heavy commercial vehicles are valuable cores.
